Our involvement in the ongoing restoration of the historic Lowther Castle stems from a longstanding partnership with Lowther, spanning numerous years, as we have continued to assist with various sections of the castle. Working closely with the team at Lowther, our collective efforts aim to meticulously restore the castle to its original grandeur, stone by stone.

Lowther required a natural stone that would seamlessly blend with the original structure of the castle in colour and style, and Wattscliffe Sandstone from emerged as the obvious choice. From straightforward sawn six-sided ashlar to intricate components like the castle merlons and moulded window surrounds, each piece demands precision and care in order to return the castle to its former glory.

This ambitious project commenced last year and is anticipated to continue for an additional two years, building upon the fantastic work done so far. Similar tasks will be undertaken in other areas of the castle, ensuring a comprehensive restoration that honours the historical stonework of each section.

Testimony: “Throughout this time, [Cumbria Quarrying Services] have provided excellent service providing us with local stones for our projects throughout our Estate and on Lowther Castle. We highly recommend them to other parties.”
