M&S, Ulverston

  • Client: Marks & Spencers
  • Contractor: Caddick Construction
  • Location: Ulverston, Cumbria
  • Material: Salterwath traditional walling with Lazonby sandstone masonry

Situated in the pretty market town of Ulverston, the 11,800 sq foot Marks and Spencer store was the anchor site for a new business and retail park with planning approval granted in 2018.

Caddick Construction wanted to use a local stone that would enable the unit to blend into its local environment. Cumbria Quarrying Services was asked to supply the local natural stone. By using local red sandstone quoins with traditional split limestone we were able to make the quoins stand out according to the brief with the end result looking exceptional.

Testimony: “The sandstone was specifically picked to be in keeping with the local area. CQS were very helpful in helping us select the correct material for the project. They were really efficient and communicated really well throughout the project. We would not hesitate to recommend them.”
